Affligem was originally brewed in the Benedictine abbey of Affligem. The brewery was first mentioned in 1074; The first image dates from 1570. During Advent and Lent, the monks were not allowed to drink so much beer. That is why a heavier beer was temporarily made: the tripel. After the return of the monks in 1870, it was not until 1885 that they brewed their own beer again. They brewed until 1917, when the German occupying forces started working on the copperware. From 1920 until the beginning of the Second World War, beer was brewed again. On March 13, 1940, the last brew was held in the abbey by Brother Tobias Vergauwen. On March 1, 1956, an agreement was signed with brewery De Hertog in Deurne and in December of that year the first crates of Affligem were sold twice. This beer was developed by Adrien Floor, technical director of the brewery and dom Tobias Vergauwen. In 1957, the Affligem Tripel was launched.
