The Nuts were only drained in the 17th century. The area is still below sea level and excess water is pumped up to higher areas and drained. The landscape is characterized by straight connecting roads lined with trees and by square or rectangular plots. Here and there there is still an old windmill or the remains of it with which water was jacked up. The area crosses the border and is called 'Les Moëres'.
