Cité Umicore

Description

In Umicore Olen, the radium was extracted from the uranium of the Congolese mine Shinkolbwe. It was that mine that would also supply the uranium for the atomic bombs that would end World War II. The installations here were built in 1922. Five years later, Olen supplied about 35% of the total volume of radium to the world market. In total, this amounted to 180 grams. Umicore was part of SGMH or the Société Général Métallurgique de Hoboken. Copper from the mines of Katanga was also processed here.
