Spalbeek is the westernmost district of Hasselt and is located on the N2, the connecting road between Hasselt and Diest. In the north of Spalbeek, the Demer flows while the southern border is formed by the Herk.
Spalbeek, which is situated in the transition area between the Kempen and moist Haspengouw, was in the past an agricultural village but has developed into a residential village since the 1970s.
