Zarren is a rural village centrally located in the Belgian province of West Flanders and a district of Kortemark. Zarren was an independent municipality until the municipal reorganization of 1971 when it merged with Werken; however, both became districts of Kortemark in 1977. The earliest mention dates back to 1089 as "Villa Sarra." This is presumably derived from the Celtic "Ser," which means "fast flowing." The village had a connection to the sea via the Diksmuide estuary. This now-reclaimed connection is currently known as the Valley of the Handzamevaart.
