The mayor of Ghent, Braun, came to Oordegem in 1914 to negotiate with the German General Boehn in order to convince them not to destroy Ghent. This was still negotiable at that time because the final objective of the German troops was Paris, and not Ghent or Bruges. As ransom, they received a hundred bicycles, ten motorcycles and a hundred thousand cigars. A month later, the Germans marched into Ghent after all.
