The borough covers an area of 4.60 km² and had about 900 inhabitants when it was abolished as a municipality in 1977.
Ternaaien is located in the north of the municipality of Visé on the left bank of the Meuse. From April to October, the village is connected to the Dutch town of Eijsden on the right bank via the Cramignon bicycle and pedestrian ferry. The Albert Canal is located a few hundred meters west of the village center.
