Description

Near the Groentemarkt is a bust of the Fonne. Alfons de Pagie (1953-1998), alias 'de Fonne' or 'the Night Mayor of Lokeren', was given a statue on the square where his home was, where he held a café and where the Fonnefeesten still take place annually in August. Willy Linthout immortalized him in the 133rd Urbanus comic 'Lokerse Paardenworsten'.
