Here the Ghent-Ostend canal (the Brugse Vaart) meets the Schipdonk canal, which was built in the 19th century at the insistence of the Ghent city council to keep the smelly Lys water out of the city. From Deinze this water is diverted in a new canal to Heist, but it first crosses the Brugse Vaart. As a solution to this, the Schipdonk Canal was pulled under the Brugse Vaart via tubes (or 'siphon'). Sas and siphon are still in use.
