Waterhouse or Brewers' House -- One of the many plans that Gilbert van Schoonbeke had was to brew beer. According to Gilbert, this had to be done on a large scale. Until then, beer was brought from Germany to Antwerp by ship. A gap in the market, van Schoonbeke must have thought. Clean, sweet drinking water had to be supplied. An underground pipe was laid that brought the water to this waterhouse. In the house, a unique pumping mechanism powered by horses (horse mill) was built that could distribute the water to the many breweries that van Schoonbeke had set up along the Vliet in Nieuwstad. Later, the Waterhouse was named Brewers' House because it also housed the Brewers' Guild. Many of the installations and furniture are still intact but awaiting restoration.
