In this forest, the groundwater level varies greatly; Sometimes dry, sometimes very wet. The orange-colored water is seepage water that rises from the bottom. It is here enriched with iron that rusts on contact with oxygen from the air, hence that color. Due to the typical minerals in the groundwater, rare plants such as the water violet occur in wet periods. In the old forest there is a lot of dead wood with a rich insect life. This attracts the great spotted woodpecker. Many mushrooms also love dead wood.
