The Hougoumont castle farm played a major role in the Battle of Waterloo on 18 June 1815. Hougoumont had a large walled garden, an orchard and a park. Hougoumont was on the right flank of Wellington's position during the battle. Napoleon did not succeed in capturing the farm, despite repeated attacks. The farm has been protected as a monument since 1938. Wellington saw Hougoumont as a support point for his defence on the right flank, which he did not want to relinquish.
