In 1794 a group of French monks of the Cistercian order founded the Trappist Abbey of Westmalle. Within the walls of the abbey, the monks brew their own beer (Westmalle Tripel, Dubbel and Extra), make Trappist cheese and work on the farm. There are currently about 35 monks living a reclusive life of prayer, study and labor. That is why you cannot visit the abbey and the brewery.
At the abbey starts the walk Trappistenpad (8 km) and the cycle loop Trappist route (44 km). Opposite the abbey, in café Trappisten, you can enjoy a glass of Trappist from the barrel and a portion of abbey cheese. The delicious abbey cheese croquettes are also not to be missed!
