From the beginning of the 19th century it was no longer allowed to bury the dead within the city walls. The old cemetery around the church was therefore moved to the Molenstraat. The new cemetery was in use from 1804 to 1950 when the park cemetery on 18 August Avenue was opened.
The neo-Gothic chapel of the Pottelsberghe de la Potterie family is the only remnant of the cemetery on the Molenstraat. It is the final resting place of 8 members of this wealthy family that had a castle on Overschelde. The burial chapel was built in 1870 with the demolition material of the old medieval St. Gertrude's Church and was prominently planted in the cemetery.
