After the Netherlands closed the drainage of young Belgium in 1830, Belgium excavated the Leopold Canal in 1840. This canal drains the polder water from the Zwin region and the Meetjesland. For the drainage of the Leie water, the Schipdonk Canal was constructed between 1846 and 1860.
The residents of the region refer to the 'stinker' and the 'blinker'. When flax was still being retted in the Leie, the Schipdonk Canal sometimes emitted an unpleasant smell. Hence: the 'stinker'. However, the water in the Leopold Canal remained relatively pure, earning it the nickname 'blinker'.
