The 'Burnt Fort' is part of the defensive line to protect Bruges and Damme from attacks from the Northern Netherlands. French troops built this fortification around 1703-1704, during the War of the Spanish Succession. It is a classic square redoubt with a moat surrounding the area and presumably a wooden lookout tower in the center. The fort was historically restored without major alterations to the landscape, a gentle reconstruction. Next to the fort ran the 'Fresh Canal'. This was built in the mid-16th century to better connect Bruges with Sluis and the Zwin estuary.
