We like to head towards the land of Herve, and we often put on our walking shoes at the military cemetery of Henri-Chapelle. A beautiful, serene place where 7,987 American soldiers are buried and 750 missing soldiers are commemorated on the pillars of the stately reception building. The white crosses, neatly lined up next to each other on the perfect, rolling lawn, bear the names of the soldiers who mostly fell in The Battle of the Bulge, the Ardennes Offensive. On the other side of the cemetery lies a viewpoint that offers a phenomenal panorama of the surroundings. A German woman once stood here beside us and expressed it this way: “As if Breughel had painted it.” We couldn’t say it better than that.
