The Bay of Heist is a nature reserve in the village of Heist, which belongs to the Belgian municipality of Knokke-Heist. The 50 ha area is owned by the Flemish government and is managed by the Agency for Nature and Forests. Due to the expansion of the Zeebrugge port, the tides at this location on Heist beach had been disturbed. There was even a place where there was no current at all. A dangerous side effect of this was the formation of quicksand, which made the location life-threatening.
