The slaughterhouse of Anderlecht or Kuregem in Brussels is still in use and excellently illustrates the industrial architecture of the nineteenth century.
In 1887, the decision was made to replace the municipal slaughterhouse with a new building. The old one was the cause of serious problems in the transport of livestock and in terms of hygiene due to outdated facilities and the dumping of waste in the Zenne, which prevented clean water from being drawn from the river for other activities. A location in Kuregem was chosen, where significant swampy areas still exist. The site is conveniently located by the Brussels-Charleroi canal, close to a railway line.
