In 1957, an international consortium of thirteen OECD countries partnered with the private sector to establish the Eurochemic pilot plant in Dessel, Belgium; a "reprocessing plant." This is a factory for treating used nuclear fuel to make new nuclear fuel. For scientists, this facility was the cream of the crop and the definitive step towards a society with limitless energy for eternity. King Baudouin personally opened the facility in 1966. Due to competition from larger-scale national reprocessing plants, Eurochemic closed its doors after eight years, in 1974. France and Great Britain, however, continued with the reprocessing of nuclear fuel. Eurochemic has since been nearly completely dismantled. The operations at the reprocessing plant are described in the book "Nuclear Energy and Reprocessing" by K.G. Paulus.
