The church, dedicated to Alexius of Edessa and Catherine of Alexandria, replaced a provisional church that was consecrated in 1596. The Beguines settled on land donated to them by the Alexians after originally staying near what is now Begijnenstraat in the 13th century. After 1259, they moved outside the city walls to the triangle between Oscar van Kesbeeckstraat-Afleidingsdijle-Maurits Sabbestraat. After the religious turmoil in the 16th century, they returned within the city walls, first near Keizerstraat, and later gradually took over the area around what is now Nonnenstraat as their permanent residence.
