The mosque was founded by the Moroccan Islamic and Cultural Association Winterslag. The building is named after Hassan ibn Thabit, poet and companion of Mohammed. It was opened on May 26, 2002. The mosque is located at Noordlaan 133 in the Genk district of Winterslag. The structure has a modernist appearance, yet the basic characteristics of a Moroccan mosque, such as a blunt, square minaret, are clearly visible. Here, the minaret is topped with several cubes, above which a dome is located. Internally, there are several other features, such as the ceiling decoration with plaster ornaments, which were made using molds and then affixed to the ceiling. Then there is the relatively low ceiling with many pillars.
