The plateau of "Les Abannets" was completely cleared to supply the local ironworks with enormous amounts of charcoal, as they could not function without it. Almost all the trees have been cut down, and the sheep and goats eat the young shoots of small trees and bushes. To restore the forest to a decent state, the Prince-Bishop of Liège, who then held power over this region, prohibited the inhabitants from allowing their animals to graze on this hill. The name "Abannets" likely comes from "bannir", which means to prohibit.
