The Hoge Blekker (33 hectares) is the centerpiece of the Belgian coast. It owes its name to its appearance. At 33 meters, it is the tallest dune in the entire Belgian coastal region. The dune has been a fixed sea mark for sailors, who could already see its white back shimmering from a distance (blekken, local dialect for shimmer). The Hoge Blekker is an impressive moving dune that has already traveled a great distance over time.
