Here and there there were still remnants of heather. In 1989, Limburgs Landschap vzw was given the opportunity to take over and restore some of these plots. The Gust Claesheide is the result of this heath restoration. Once what covered a large part of Limburg with heath vegetation. This landscape was created by an ancient agricultural culture. The people lived as small farmers in valleys, in the vicinity of water, hay meadows and fertile soil. They cleared pieces of forest to turn it into fields. Pruning of old heath bushes was laid in the stables and mixed with the manure. That's how it formed compost avant la lettre. Pruning the heath bushes then yielded more heather blossom. And the honeybees benefited from that. Due to the years of scaling up of the heathland, it was quite easy to restore heathland here, with the desired species as a result.
