In various places, Limburgs landschap vzw wants to restore the open character of the valley. For instance, at the end of Molenbroekstraat, a controllable weir was constructed on the Oude Beek in 2014 to keep the mineral-rich water in the area for a longer time. Nature responds well to this: beautiful marsh vegetation with marsh spiraea and meadowsweet is developing. Against the dike, a zone with open water has emerged where many species of dragonflies, amphibians, and birds have quickly found a new home. In other areas, Limburgs Landschap opts for regular management. Here, grasslands are developing with large sedge vegetation, buttercup meadows, or who knows, valuable bluegrass meadows.
