For bats such as the late flyer and dwarf bats, hollow roads are the ideal connecting route between their habitat and hunting areas. They find shelter in windy weather and can hunt well for the many insects that also like to stay there.
The hollow road is not only very valuable for flora and fauna, but is also a geological window on the subsoil due to its wear and tear. Our soil is made up of different layers or deposits. The sands of Neerrepen is such a layer. With burrows of rabbit and badger you can see this in the pale gray sand. The yellow fine sand belongs to the geological layer Zanden of Grimmertingen. This layer was deposited here by the sea between 37 and 33 million years ago. It contains many fossils that are typical of a tropical environment.
