The Lords of Diest, who ruled the city and its surroundings in the Middle Ages, chose a strategic location for the seigniorial castle, since then known as the castle hill. After the French Revolution, the domain came into private hands, after which the last owner Henri Verstappen donated it to the city of Diest in 1939 with the express wish to make it accessible to all residents. Henri Verstappen received the gate monument because he donated the Warande to the city of Diest.
