The anchorage is situated in the Hoge Kempen in the province of Limburg and is part of the traditional landscape 'Limburg heath and forest area'. The area lies west of the Zuid-Willemsvaart and the municipalities of Opgrimbie, Rekem and Neerharen and is largely intersected by the steep edge of the Kempen Plateau. In the anchorage, large contiguous forest complexes and smaller zones of (wet) heathland dominate, some of which are part of the Hoge Kempen National Park landscape park. From west to east, the Heiwijkbeek, Ziepbeek and Asbeek rivers cross the anchorage. In addition, the anchorage also includes the historic castle and the domain of Pietersheim. The demarcation extends over the municipal territories of Maasmechelen and Lanaken.
