The harsh story of the Limburg mines lasted less than a century but took a heavy toll on a human level: deaths from pneumoconiosis, deaths during strikes and mining accidents, unemployment due to closures?
After André Dumont discovered coal in 1901, the appearance of the region changed rapidly. Mining installations drove some subsistence farmers off the heath. Pine trees, which needed to satisfy the wood hunger of the mines, replaced heath shrubs, making those heath lands temporarily somewhat more profitable. Garden districts were developed, and mining buildings, headframes, and spoil tips gave the landscape a new horizon. Seven Limburg coal mines were established.
On September 30, 1992, the very last Limburg coal was extracted, marking the beginning of Limburg's mining past. From that day on, the fight for the preservation of mining heritage began. These mining sites and landscapes are not only relics of the past. They have been transformed into fascinating places for the present and the future, offering space for new economic activities.
Walking paths were created on the spoil tips, and mining railways were converted into bike paths. There are multicultural markets, an educational center, an exhibition space?
