Sint-Pauwels is a village in the Belgian province of East Flanders and a district of Sint-Gillis-Waas. In 2001, Sint-Pauwels had 4,359 inhabitants. In 1117, Sint-Pauwels was known as Clapdorp and was a hamlet of Kemzeke. In 1234, it became a separate parish dedicated to Saint Paul. The Recollect friars who were expelled from Hulst in 1646 settled in Sint-Pauwels for a time. This is where the neighborhood Patershoek is named after. In 1689, they established themselves permanently in Sint-Niklaas.
