As if the plundering by the armies in the 17th century was not enough in this region, the soldiers infected the local population with diseases such as plague, dysentery, and sexually transmitted diseases. In 1678, a severe plague epidemic breaks out here in Sint-Laureins-Berchem. The sick are quarantined in a "cabane" which later retained the place name "'t Zieckhuys."
