According to the results of toponymic studies, the Franks are believed to have settled in the region of Jodoigne during the 4th and 5th centuries, with a certain Gobert playing a role in the establishment of the settlement Gobertange. In Gobertange itself, as well as in Herbais, Merovingian burial grounds were discovered. They date from the second half of the 7th or 8th century. Some of the graves were bordered with rough-hewn sandstone and covered with large flat stones.
