Selon les résultats des études toponymiques, les Francs se seraient installés dans la région de Jodoigne aux 4ème et 5ème siècles, un certain Gobert ayant joué un rôle dans la création du village de Gobertange. À Gobertange même, mais aussi à Herbais, des champs funéraires mérovingiens ont été découverts. Ils datent de la seconde moitié du 7ème ou du 8ème siècle. Certaines des tombes étaient bordées de pierre de calcaire taillée brute et recouvertes de grandes pierres plates.
