There is no clarity about the exact date when the first town hall was built. The current town hall is certainly not the first town hall. This building is located on the Grote Markt, which has been the new center of Tienen since the destruction of the city in 1635. It was originally built in beautiful Flemish Renaissance style. In the 16th century, it was owned by the Immens family. In 1712, the city purchased the building.
The beautiful facade was demolished in 1836-37 according to the plans of K.L. Drossart. In its place came a massive facade, resting on six solid Corinthian columns and a gigantic cornice. The new facade features niches adorned with busts of painters Van Dyck, Rubens, and Coebergher, alongside Charles the Fifth, Vesalius, Grétry, and Justus Lipsius.
