This is one of the 5 green poles in the Ghent region. The Wonderwoud is being built on behalf of Nature and Forest in collaboration with the City of Ghent and the municipality of Lochristi. The first part was opened on November 29, 2024.
As the name suggests, it was once intended to be an airport. Its typical shape is still clearly visible on maps and aerial photos.
Some may know it from the fish pond, the execution site, or the sand extraction.
At the adjacent execution site, resistance fighters were executed during WWII. The area shows many mounds and bunkers where ammunition was once stored. The memorial site is protected as a landscape.
