The Papeter of Essene is once again on its pedestal on the renewed church square. The bronze statue by artist Patrick Van Craenenbroeck was driven off its pedestal by a stray road giant on a Friday the thirteenth. The 2007 statue was damaged in the three anchored places and the Papeter also had a dent in his head and a scratch on his arm. It had to go back to the foundry for repair.
The Teralfense artist made the Papeter in 2007 on behalf of the Essene Trade Committee. It was the committee's parting gift to the village.
The people of Essen owe their mocking name 'papeters' to their rich hop past. According to tradition, it was the rule that at the small fair a teil (rice) porridge was made for each hop stake where on June 29, the feast day of St. Peter and St. Paul, the hops had grown to a meter from the end point.
