At the border of As and Opglabbeek, on the northern valley edge of the Bosbeek, the Heiderbos was spared from large-scale afforestation. In addition to heather, the massive presence of juniper bushes is characteristic. The shrub has always been valued as a supplier of aromatic (false) berries to flavor genever, fragrant wood for smoking meat, and evergreen decorative branches. Remarkable is the typical, pronounced columnar shape of the bushes. Management is focused on the currently difficult, natural regeneration of the plants. Nearby, the old municipal gravel pit has been transformed into a fish pond. Further north, the Lietenbeek cut through a shallow side valley of the Bosbeek.
