Located on the plateau of the Pays de Herve, the Montzen marshalling yard spans about thirty hectares over a length of nearly 2 km, southwest of Plombières. Although of anthropogenic origin, certain parts of the site do have significant biological interest. This is the case for the open wastelands occupying the ballast and ash areas. Several interesting plant species can be observed there, as well as an entomological fauna consisting of thermophilic and heliophilic species. The wooded strip bordering the station to the southwest is currently colonized by a wet forest in which a spectacular population of field horsetail (Equisetum sylvaticum) and giant horsetail (Equisetum telmateia) has established itself. There is also an old quarry that has been partly reforested, hosting among other things the small pyrola (Pyrola minor), a rare and threatened plant in the Walloon Region.
