The state forest of Grünhaut is located to the north of the village of Bilstain, on the Welkenraedt plateau. Covering an area of about one hundred hectares, it is one of the main forest massifs of the Pays de Herve. The woods are divided into two parts by the highways and rail links connecting Liège to Aix-la-Chapelle in Germany. Various deciduous forest groups are observed interspersed with coniferous plantations. Some bodies of water are also present, as well as, very locally, fragments of heathland with heather. The site presents multiple interests both in terms of landscape and biodiversity. It notably hosts 9 species of amphibians and reptiles. A recently developed stormwater basin on the western edge has also proven to be very interesting for the odonate fauna.
