The former vagrant colonies of Wortel and Merksplas are making a bid for recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And rightly so, because these vast domains belong to the absolute top among the Flemish nature reserves. Part of the former vagrant farm was converted into a visitor centre by Natuurpunt Markvallei. Among other things, it houses the Jan Spannenburg Museum, named after one of the pioneers of nature conservation in the Noorderkempen, and it is the base for many cyclists and hikers in the Colonies. In the café we can recommend a Gageleer, an organic regional beer, or a Carrot Tongkhatch, a genever based on blackthorn berries.
