At the Municipal Cemetery in Mechelen, there are three Commonwealth War Graves, graves of veterans, and a large number of Belgian War Graves from World War II, especially of victims of Allied bombings and V1 attacks. The Allied bombings caused the death of 342 residents. The cemetery also has two memorials: for veterans and for the Belgian political prisoner Désiré Bouchery. A tribute monument designed by Boudewijn Tuerlinckx honors those who fell during World War I and World War II. The monument stands on two wide steps, making it visible from a distance and rising above the honorary area.
