On the place where Franciscan sisters lived for centuries, the cheese farm Catharinadal is located. The Boonen family lives and works in this historic farm, near the center of Achel. The brothers Bert and Peter started making their own butter and cheese in 1990 with the milk of 60 cows. A little later, herb cheese and yogurt were added and now they sell about 210 homemade dairy products, including the now world-famous "Grevenbroecker" blue mold cheese. In 2009, this cheese won the "Caseus Award" in Lyon, which is considered the world championship of cheeses. The most important basic product of Catharinadal is the fresh milk. This is supplied by about 100 red-variegated "long live" cows that graze on about 20 hectares of meadows of grass and clover. Thanks to the daily fresh milk, Catharinadal can provide the best guarantee on fresh cheese, ice cream and dairy products. They make cheese like it was made in the Kempen 500 years ago, a natural product of raw milk that, apart from salt, contains no additives.
