Hellegat is a hamlet that originated in 1900 at the former Hellegat ferry. The ferry, which operated between Hellegat and Ruisbroek, remained active until 1944. The workers of the brick factories along the Rupel river lived in small houses and streets between the brick kilns and drying sheds. Many of these homes can still be found here today in the streetscape.
Did you know:
- The Suske and Wiske comic 'De Hellegathonden' is partially set in Hellegat.
- Several exterior shots of the film 'Koko Flanel' (1990 - Stijn Coninx) were filmed here.
