The Frederiksmonument - for the Wervikanen 'the cannons' - on the square of the same name was inaugurated in 1971 as a tribute to Willem George Frederik of Orange-Nassau, the brother of William I (later king) of the Netherlands. He was severely wounded in 1793 during the Battle of Wervik, where a coalition of English and Dutch troops defeated the French sansculotten (republicans). The monument was created thanks to the financial support of vtbKultuur. It is flanked by two cannons, named Waldeck and Clairfayt, a field marshal and a major general respectively. The guns are a donation from the Dutch government.
