The canal that cuts through Beernem is the one from Ostend to Ghent. The waterway has existed since 1623. Because traveling by ship was much more comfortable than traveling overland at that time, a luxurious water coach was once introduced between Ghent and Bruges. This daily shuttle service (over 46 km) continued until the mid-19th century.
