The large farm, later the 'Hof te Vlierzele', was founded in the 6th century in the uncultivated land on the western border of the present municipality, probably as a cattle breeding centre and later donated to St Bavo's Abbey in Ghent by a certain Morbertus. The abbey immediately made an effort to valorize this property and it is probably thanks to this expansion, which probably took place under the direct leadership of a monk, that serfs were established next to the court, that a church was built and that the Kruiskouter south of the 'Hof te Vlierzele' was reclaimed.
