Hellegat is a hamlet in the Belgian municipality of Niel, in the province of Antwerp. Hellegat is located in the south of the municipality by the Rupel and borders the municipality of Boom.
The name Hellegat is presumably derived on one hand from Hella, goddess of the underworld. The suffix -gat, on the other hand, means "opening" or "access to something," and it was also used in the old language to refer to the mouth of a smaller river or stream into a larger one. In the case of Hellegat, this assertion is geographically supported by the confluence of the Hellebeek across the Rupel into this river.
