The Aa overflow is located between the Senne and the Brussels-Charleroi canal. It was built in 1925. In the event of heavy rainfall and to prevent the river from flooding downstream, this channel drains the overflow of the Senne into the canal, where the overflow flows at the foot of the Anderlecht lock. It is a concrete structure with 4 automated valves. Along this branch of the stream towards the canal there are also a number of species that are linked to marshy nature, such as pollard willow, alder, yellow iris and – from spring – middle green frog.
