The word Zoniënwoud comes from the Latin 'Sonia', meaning forest. There would also be an etymological connection with the Zenne (formerly 'Sunnia'), the river that crossed the forest massif for many kilometers in times when it was much more extensive. Since the end of the 18th century, there has primarily been a focus on the beech, but it should also make room for other species such as oak and larch. The current forest management aims mainly for a quality forest, to give biodiversity every opportunity, and to make the forest accessible to the public.
